History of the UNPHU

The Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University was founded on April 21, 1966, as a private, not for profit institution incorporated pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 273 dated July 27th of that same year.  The government granted it legal personality through Decree No. 1090 dated March 21st, 1967, whose Article 2 states that it is authorized to “issue academic degrees with the same scope as those issued by official or autonomous institutions of equal rank.”

The University governs its academic and administrative activities in accordance with the provisions of the Organic Statute approved by the Board of Administration of the Dominican University Foundation, Inc., on December 14, 1970.

The initiators and founders of the UNPHU are well-known individuals representing important national activities, who created the private organization known as the “Dominican University Foundation, Inc..”

The name of Pedro Henríquez Ureña chosen for the University is given in homage and recognition of that great Dominican philologist and humanist who was the glory of literature in America and around the world.

The UNPHU started operation on November 19, 1966, in a State-owned building which was the headquarters of the Geriatric Hospital and was granted by the Government to the Dominican University Foundation. This building is located on Ave. John F. Kennedy, next to a large tract of land, also donated by the Government, so that the University could expand its physical installations into a second campus. In both campuses the UNPHU has gradually extended its installations as it has developed its academic programs and increased its student enrollment.
